By Dr. Stratton C. Murrell
I've had some interesting connections with the Daily News since when back in the 1940s it was known as the News And Views. At that time I was only twelve years old and I was just an errand boy and I sold newspapers (The News And Views) mostly on Court St, hot off the press. This was literally true in that the News and Views Office and print shop was at the intersection of Court St. and New Bridge st. In my imagination I was a cub reporter just like Jimmy Olson of the Daily Planet in the Superman comic book series. At one time I covered a real fire and took some pictures and wrote a story to earn my Boy Scout Journalism and Photography merit badges(8-5-2013: It is interesting to note that my "news story" was never published in a real newspaper until sixty years later. This episode was when I started the new millennium off with a bang. I was an eye doctor (Optometrist) at the time and was also one of the historians of this area. Elliott Potter was the editor of the Jacksonville Daily News and he wanted some of us to write some stories about the history of Onslow county. In the process of doing this I was telling some of my stories to a young reporter by the name of Timi Toler (as of 2013 she is the city editor of the Daily News) and she had my first news story published in the Daily News sixty years after it was written. As time went by I kept writing the stories and there was another connection. Madison Taylor was the city editor at the time and he was responsible for getting me in contact with Arcadia Publishing who wanted a local historian to write about the history of Onslow County. and Camp Lejeune. After some consultation with the publishers, it was decided that my wife, Billie Jean and I ,would be co-authors of the book (Images Of America, Jacksonville And Camp Lejeune). The book was published in 2001 (we started the new millennium off with a bang) and we have been receiving a small annual royalty since that time. At this time I was also writing some stories for Cheryl Roberts , editor of the of The Lighthouse News, a publication of the Outer Banks Lighthouse Society. One thing led to another and Elizabeth Hudson, editor of Our State magazine, published a story (Cub Reporter) about Billie Jean and I as historians of North Carolina (see Our State, June, 2011). The Daily News gave the finishing touches to it all by adding some great comments and a picture.
The story will be published at a later date. 6-13-2013---and here is the picture: It is so significant that it should be included in every display (link) of our story, CUB REPORTER
9-9-2014: the above picture is of great significance and ties in neatly with the story, CUB REPORTER, in that it shows Dr. Murrell, and his wife Billie Jean, at a book signing at Walden Books at the Jacksonville Mall. They were co-authors of the book,
